Started in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level domains remained online.
